Have you ever been in a situation where the longer you stare at a word, the weirder it looks? Most of the time, a word can seem to be misspelled or awkward if looked at too long. It’s called ‘semantic satiation’. The more you repeat or look at a word, the more it looks like it’s spelled incorrectly. The other day I was editing a post late at night and typed the word sleep a billion times. After using the word again and again, it started to look really weird. For a second I thought I spelled it wrong, and a while after I felt like I’ve never seen that word before, so I had to search it up. When I took a two minute break and came back, my head cleared up and the word sleep looked like it was spelled correctly. Give it a try and write or type ‘sleep’ over and over again while having a staring contest with the word. ಠ_ಠ You’ll probably start to wonder whether or not the word was always spelled that way. Words just get weird, similar to when a person’s vision when beer goggles are put on. Whatever you see becomes confusing and tricky through the goggles, the same goes for words when overused.
What It Feels Like:
Maybe sometimes you feel like some letters aren’t suppose to be in the word and that they should just float away.
At times you may feel like a letter is missing.
Or… you think all the letters seem wrong and should be dropped.
Interesting Things About Semantic Satiation (Semantic Saturation):
Semantic satiation is a phenomenon when a word or phrase loses its meaning temporarily due to constant repetition. It can happen while typing, writing, editing, and also reading. One way to experience it quickly is to type out one word and copy and paste it again and again. Voila, the word loses meaning almost immediately and the sensation lasts for about ten seconds.

Did the word look weird? The word weird can look like wierd, wierrd, weirrd, werid, etc.
